The Creative Communicator standard is vital in esports. This sixth standard of the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students is one of the top standards in esports. The Creative Communicator standard states:
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.
The esports game League of Legends requires effective communication between teammates and coaches both in match and outside matches. And the dynamic is not limited to gameplay and strategy.
The first and third indicator of the standard states:
Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication.
Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
Student agency and choice are important. And knowing how to communicate effectively is key with this indicator. The student has to think “am I expressing myself in a way to appropriately get my idea across to others.” In League of Legends, teams are in constant communication. The slightest mouse movements, coordination and timing, the platform and tool choice for communicating an idea is key in determining success or failure in a match. Even the team dynamic is important as seen in this clip that focuses on the lack of communication between teammates.
Communication is key with all aspects of esports. Rarely can a participant not communicate their thoughts and ideas and be a successful participant. Creatively getting ideas and thoughts across separates good players and great players.
